ancient-d20-replica-and-dice-box
Replica of the first d20 ever found

You know what this is, right? The math rock of destiny. The die of disaster. The mighty d20.

But did you know people were rolling twenty-sided dice in ancient Egypt? They INVENTED it!

Yeah—the Egyptians had d20s, y’all. You can’t make this stuff up.

The artifact that inspired our replica was made in Egypt during the Ptolemaic or Roman period and may be more than 2,000 years old. The original, carved from serpentinite, now resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its exact purpose has been lost to history, although scholars believe polyhedral dice like this may have been used for games, divination, or perhaps a little of both (of course, WE know it was for TTRPG but we're not telling).

We carefully modeled our 3D-printed and hand-painted replica after that original artifact. Its twenty faces bear the same Greek letters used on the ancient die. Because Greek letters also served as numbers—and later formed the basis for much of the Coptic alphabet—I consulted a Coptic researcher and priest to determine how the familiar Arabic numerals should be paired with and positioned alongside the ancient characters.

All we added were those modern numerals so you can actually use it at the table.

Historically inspired, hand-painted, and ready to decide whether your hero performs a legendary feat or falls face-first into a Troll Hole.

The ancient Egyptians may not have invented roleplaying games—but they apparently understood the importance of a good d20.

The Met’s official artifact record supports the material, provenance, inscriptions, and possible divinatory use of the original from which this replica is modeled after.

Dimensions: 20mm

Weight: 2.1 (with custom box)
